NewsThank You Thursday - United Way of Summit County05.04.2017 United Way of Summit County envisions a community where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, financial stability and healthy lives. United Way also improves lives by mobilizing the caring power of the Summit County community to advance the common good. The International Soap Box Derby and United Way of Summit County have been partners for nearly a decade to advance the common good in our community. The United Way Corporate Derby Challenge® presented by Fallsway Equipment Company is an annual event that raises money to benefit the Soap Box Derby's Bill Speeg Memorial scholarship fund and support at-risk youth in Summit County. The Corporate Derby Challenge is a high-energy event that ignites a team's competitive fire as they collaborate, assemble, decorate, and compete in an entertaining race with their own adult Soap Box Derby car. Corporations, small businesses, groups and community organizations annually take part in this entertaining competition. “This past year through the funds raised by the Corporate Derby Challenge we were able to place our mini car program into four Boys and Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve and First Glance’s Launch Kenmore Program,” said Derby Vice President Bobby Dinkins. “In addition a stock car and a High School Engineering Design car were placed into the First Glance Man Up program where middle and high school students built the cars and will race them in the upcoming GRC STEM Team Competition. Later this summer we will partner with the Akron Area YMCA and their summer camp program. All of this couldn’t happen without the support of the United Way of Summit County.” The Derby would like to say THANK YOU to United Way of Summit County for helping us continue our mission of building knowledge and character, and creating meaningful experiences through collaboration and fair and honest competition. This is the 32nd installment of our weekly “Thank You Thursday” feature. Each week we will offer a heartfelt “Thank You” to a corporation, civic or community leader, volunteer, foundation or an individual who has helped us continue our mission.
