Explore & Discover STEM!

Girls Racing to STEM Workshop is open to girls in grades 5-8. Register someone you know who would be interested in a fun of activities at the International Soap Box Derby and a chance to race a car down the famous Derby Downs track!

Throughout the event, all participants will have the chance to explore and discover different aspects of STEM during exciting activities – including a test drive down the world-famous, 989 foot Derby Downs Track in Akron, Ohio! Enjoy these activities:

 

  • Visit the Soap Box Derby Museum and view Champions’ cars dating from 1934 – present
  • Attend STEM presentations by guest speakers from the University of Akron’s College of Engineering
  • Navigate Derby Downs in search of historic sites and markers 
  • Test drive a Soap Box Derby car down the track 
  • Build and race Mini Soap Box Derby cars

Weather Policy

Soap Box Derby events will take place in the rain if there is no lightning or standing water on the track. In the event of a cancellation, we will share that information here and on our social media pages. For additional information, please contact us.

Reserve Your Spot

Parents of girls in grades 5 – 8 are encouraged to register today to reserve their child’s spot for Girls Racing to STEM Workshop. Registration is limited to the first 40 participants. REGISTRATION IS CLOSED for 2024. See you in 2025!

QUESTIONS

WILL MY CHILD SPEND TIME OUTSIDE?

Yes! Several activities take place outside during the program.

WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD WEAR?

Please dress your child in comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes and closed-toe shoes.

WILL MY CHILD GET TO GO DOWN THE HILL?

Yes, as long as weather permits. The Soap Box Derby does not allow rides down the track if there is severe weather and/or standing water on the track.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The Girls Racing to STEM program is FREE and linited to the first 40 registrants. 

WHERE DO I DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP MY CHILD?

Drop-off and Pick-up are both located at 1000 George Washington Blvd., Akron, OH 44312 at the Blue Building. Drop-off will start at 8:15am and Pick-up will start at 12:30pm.

YOU MUST SIGN YOUR CHILD IN DURING DROP-OFFAND SIGN THEM OUT DURING PICK-UP!

WHAT IF I WANT SOMEONE ELSE TO PICK-UP MY CHILD?

Please let us know ahead of time if someone else will be picking them up.
