FirstEnergyAll-American Soap Box Derby Countdown

Local History

The first Soap Box Derby in the City of Flint was held in 1936. At that time, the races took place on Cadillac Street (near where the race will take place on June 8th). The Soap Box Derby quickly became a cherished community event for participants and spectators alike for the decades that followed.

In 1969, Cronin Derby Downs was built as a permanent race location and the race has been held there ever since. As the Flint Soap Box Derby returns this year, track repairs remain necessary and restoration efforts will soon be underway.

The Greater Flint Area has also produced three All-American Soap Box Derby Champions over the years, including Greg Cardinal in 1978, Russ Yurk in 1979, and Mike Burdgick in 1983.
