Soap Box Derby Receives Grant From Akron Community Foundation for General Operating

11.05.2021

The International Soap Box Derby (ISBD) announced it has received a $25,000-grant for general operating support from the Akron Community Foundation, as part of the foundation’s Civic Affairs Work.

These funds will help enhance the overall experience for racers, their families and spectators visiting Akron for the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship in July and the many other events held throughout the year. This support will expand the Soap Box Derby’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education programs and grow participation in Soap Box Derby programs around the country.

“We are so thankful for the support we receive from Akron Community Foundation and its funders to further the mission of the Soap Box Derby,” said Mark Gerberich, president and chief executive office, ISBD. “These resources are important for operating the Derby and delivering our racing and education programs in a way that impacts young people.”

For several years running the ISDB has partnered with many local organizations to expand the reach of its programs. ISBD works alongside Akron Public Schools, Boys and Girls Club of the Western Reserve, YMCA, First Glance, the Akron Children’s Museum and many other community partners to place full-size Derby cars and Mini-Cars (with corresponding curriculum) into the hands of all youth who may benefit.
