Ronald Reagan helped focus a spotlight on Derby Downs when he attended as a celebrity guest in 1951, during his time as a Hollywood leading man. He lost the Oil Can Trophy Race that year to Paul Winchell with the help of the ventriloquist’s sidekick, Jerry Mahoney. After he became nationally recognized politician and President, the story of Ronald Reagan’s Participation in Soap Box Derby festivities brought high levels of attention and credibility to the youth racing event.
