Rick Acker’s involvement with the Soap Box Derby started as a competitor in the Akron local race for five years beginning in 1960. After returning from military service, he became active in the local organization in 1974, running clinics and serving as a mentor through the Derby Uncle program. He later served on the local Board of Directors from 1974 until 1990, was Akron local president in 1989, and race director in 1990. For more than 20 years, he operated the photo finish photographic and video equipment at the All-American. He was a member of the National Control Board for many years and served as chief inspector for the Masters division at the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby.
