Hall of Famer Richard Behan, Dover, NH, won the local New Hampshire Soap Box Derby on his first attempt in 1969. In Akron, he placed second in that year’s All-American Soap Box Derby. Since then, Dick, as he is best known, has volunteered for local, regional and national Soap Box Derby programs. He served as a board member and officer for the New Hampshire organization since 2006 and serves as the New Hampshire race director since 2012.
Setting his sights on helping at the regional level, Dick became assistant Regional 10 director in 2012 and regional director in 2022. in this role, Dick acts as liaison between the International Soap Box Derby and local race programs in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. For decades to today, he continues to mentor and encourage young racers.
Dick earned a business administration degree from the University of New Hampshire. He retired in 2017 from Liberty Mutual Information Systems. He was a principal software developer for 36 years.
