Soap Box Derby has a new local race, built by STEAM
The race is newly sanctioned, but the residents of Columbus, Ga. are no strangers to racing or the International Soap Box Derby’s STEM education programs. In fact, today, the nonprofit Let’s GROW STEAMx, launched their “cutting-edge” Technology Lab. The lab is a “game-changing addition” to their already highly successful River City Race Program, according to Robbie Branscomb, CEO, Let’s Grow STEAMx.
A New Lab and a New Name
This year, the 10-week Technology Lab program ends with the inaugural River City Soap Box Derby on Saturday, April 26, in Columbus. The race itself is not new; this would have been its sixth year under the name River City Gravity Race. However, just recently, they became an officially sanctioned ISBD local race, with Branscomb continuing as director. Among many things, this means their local champions can now qualify for the World Championships in Akron in July.
How Does the Lab Work?
According to Branscomb, the facility helps bring technology into the race program, so students can design, build, and share their gravity racing journey “like never before.” Essentially, students are immersed in science, engineering and creative storytelling through an innovative curriculum. The lab, then, also provides tools to design and construct gravity-powered cars and document progress through videos and digital media. These hands-on experiences enhance students’ understanding of STEAM principles and equip them with vital skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and media literacy. All of this is in preparation for the River City Soap Box Derby in April.
The Technology Lab is possible thanks to a grant from Amdocs.
“This Technology Lab represents a leap forward in how we engage and inspire students through STEAM learning,” said Branscomb. “We’re providing students with the tools to dream big, innovate, and showcase their talents. With the lab as a central hub, future leaders can gain invaluable skills that will benefit them long after race day.”
“Robbie is a super person who is dedicated to providing youth in her community with learning opportunities,” said Linda Hubbell, ISBD education director. “We are proud to partner with Let’s Grow STEAMx, as they build their educational programming and ISBD race participation.”
