Competing in the Soap Box Derby has been a family tradition since Jim Underwood raced in the Akron local in 1938. His Children have participated over the years and since the mid-Seventies, he has been a National Control Board member for the All-American program. He has served as chief inspector and was Control Board chairman in 1982. For nearly three decades, Jim Underwood has managed the wheel calibration process to assure fair competition on race day.
